Afghan Hound: a long coat and room to run
The Afghan Hound combines a long, fine coat with a distinctly shorter saddle on the mature dog. Choosing one means planning for both coat work and opportunities to exercise in a secure space; the flowing outline is only part of everyday ownership.
Coat work changes with age
The FCI standard describes long, fine hair on the ribs, forequarters, hindquarters and flanks, a silky topknot and a short-haired foreface. On mature dogs, the saddle running back from the shoulders carries short, close hair. A uniformly long coat is not the whole picture.
The earlier UK guide lists daily grooming. The AKC care guide explains why age matters: puppy fuzz needs relatively little maintenance, while the adolescent and adult coat can take several hours of brushing each week. Regular bathing with suitable shampoo and conditioner, nail care and tooth brushing also belong in the routine. Discuss the tools and time needed for the particular coat before committing.
Exercise beyond a garden
The UK exercise category is more than two hours daily, alongside a large house, large garden and country setting. Those broad categories are useful planning prompts, rather than a prescription for every age and condition.
AKC guidance calls for leash exercise and opportunities to run in a large enclosure with a high, secure fence; it discusses long runs for mature dogs. A garden only helps if it offers suitable, supervised activity. Plan where that exercise can happen, including on days when travel to a running area is difficult.
Height and build
FCI ideal height is 68–74 cm for males and 63–69 cm for females. The standard supplies no numeric weight range. Its description combines strength and dignity with the characteristic coat, rather than treating long hair as the breed’s defining feature on its own.
Compare the coat commitment
Borzoi offer another tall, coated hound comparison, with a long, supple coat that may be wavy or form large curls. Saluki have smooth and feathered forms. Their grooming work is different from maintaining an adult Afghan coat; compare the actual coat and the available exercise arrangements as well as the height figures.
