Airedale Terrier: a wiry coat and time for shared activity

The Airedale has a muscular, relatively short body and a hard outer coat over a softer undercoat. Planning for one means considering its larger dimensions alongside regular coat work, walks and daily play.

Build and coat

FCI height is about 58–61 cm for males and 56–59 cm for females, matching the earlier UK description. No numeric weight range is given. The back is short, strong and level, with a deep but not broad chest.

The outer coat is hard, dense and wiry, lying close over the body and legs. Undercoat is shorter and softer; the hardest coats may be crinkled or slightly waved. This is a different texture from the soft, wavy coats of some other terriers.

A grooming routine with more than one timetable

The UK overview lists daily grooming. AKC care guidance describes weekly brushing, careful combing where tangles are found and a full bath, brush and strip or clip three or four times a year. Discuss those different tasks with a groomer and ask for a demonstration on the actual coat.

The same guide includes regular ear checks and tooth brushing. These smaller tasks fit alongside the brush-out, while full coat work may need a separate appointment. Ask for a practical routine you can maintain between visits.

Daily activity and space

The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a large house, large garden and either town or country. AKC describes a moderate daily play session alongside walks or yard time several times a day. Plan the actual shared activity, rather than relying on access to a garden alone.

Consider the adult dog’s room for resting, grooming and travel as well as the walking routes available. Adjust activity to age and condition instead of treating the UK category as a fixed prescription.

Compare the coat and scale

Welsh Terriers have a lower FCI height limit and a similarly hard, wiry coat, with their own pet-grooming options. Irish Terriers have a more racy outline and different UK and FCI height descriptions. Compare the dimensions and the demonstrated coat routine together.
