Alaskan Malamute: a substantial dog with daily coat work

The Malamute combines a broad frame, deep chest and heavy bone with a thick, coarse coat. Daily brushing and substantial shared exercise are practical commitments to weigh alongside its size. Its heavy-freighting background also helps explain why it looks different from the lighter Siberian Husky.

Build and size

The body is longer than the height at the shoulder, with a straight back sloping gently towards the hips. The FCI describes a natural range in size and gives desirable freighting sizes of 63.5 cm and 38 kg for males, 58.5 cm and 34 kg for females. Type, proportions, movement and function take priority over closeness to those figures.

The earlier UK guide instead gives preferred figures of 64 cm and 39 kg for males, 58 cm and 34 kg for females. These are preferred sizes in their respective descriptions, rather than a single closed range for every adult.

Getting through the coat

Coarse guard hair covers a dense, oily, woolly undercoat. Hair is longer around the neck and shoulders, breeches and plumed tail; this is not an all-over long, soft coat. The AKC care guide recommends a pin brush and metal comb every day, checking for tangles as you work. Add an undercoat rake during the twice-yearly shedding periods.

For a pet Malamute, the same guide suggests baths about six to eight weeks apart, distinguishing this from weekly show-dog bathing. Regular nail trimming belongs in the routine too. The guide also recommends regular ear checks and tooth brushing.

Exercise takes time

The UK guide places exercise above two hours a day and describes a large house and garden in a country setting. The AKC suggests shared hiking, running or swimming, as well as play in a securely enclosed space. Plan the outings and coat work together: both require regular owner time.

Compare the working outlines

A Siberian Husky has a more moderate frame and a smoother-lying outer coat, although its own exercise commitment is substantial. A Samoyed has a harsh, straight outer coat over a soft undercoat and also needs daily brushing. Comparing the actual grooming routine is more useful than choosing from a northern appearance alone.
