Australian Shepherd: seasonal undercoat work and shared outdoor time

The Australian Shepherd is slightly longer than tall, with moderate bone and a medium-length coat. The coat can be straight or slightly wavy and has a seasonal maintenance cycle. Regular shared activity takes time alongside brushing, particularly when the undercoat is coming out.

Preferred heights and a moderate outline

The FCI gives preferred heights of 51–58 cm for males and 46–53 cm for females, putting quality ahead of size. The earlier UK guide gives the same height ranges without a numerical weight. A deep chest, level back and strong loin sit under the moderate mane and leg feathering.

The FCI notes that undercoat quantity varies with climate. Hair is shorter on the head, ears and fronts of the legs; longer body hair should not obscure the balanced frame. Coat color alone says little about the care or activity a particular dog will need.

Brush through the changing undercoat

The AKC recommends weekly brushing in ordinary conditions. During shedding, it suggests an undercoat rake every two or three days followed by a wire-brush cleanup. The earlier UK category is grooming more than once weekly, so allow time for coat checks between fuller sessions.

The same guide recommends occasional baths when needed, regular nail trimming, ear checks and tooth brushing. Check what has collected in the coat after outdoor play instead of waiting until the next bath to notice tangles or debris.

Activity with the owner

The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, with a large country house and garden. The AKC suggests long walks, hikes and dog sports, and delays running companionship until after puppyhood when the skeleton is fully formed. Plan the activity around the individual dog and its stage of growth; a working background does not prescribe the same exercise session for every household.

Compare the actual grooming jobs

The Australian Cattle Dog has shorter, hard outer hair and a short-bristle brush routine. The Shetland Sheepdog has longer straight hair, with particular mat checks behind the ears and elbows. Compare those hands-on tasks and their different UK exercise categories rather than choosing by coat color or herding reputation.
