Barbet: curls, coat length and daily activity
The Barbet has a woolly, curly coat over a body slightly longer than its height. Its recognisable outline needs regular handling, but a natural working finish and a carefully shaped show coat are different grooming choices. Decide which finish you can maintain before treating a photograph as a care plan.
Build and size
The FCI standard gives heights of 58–65 cm for males and 53–61 cm for females, with a 1 cm tolerance. The earlier UK guide uses the same height ranges. Neither provides a numerical weight here. A broad, deep chest and strong back describe the body beneath the hair; a large-looking coat should not be mistaken for extra body mass.
Choosing a coat finish
The detailed UK coat description allows a working clip while retaining visible curl and texture; it penalises stylised trimming. FCI also allows grooming that helps working use and maintenance. AKC care guidance describes a brushed-out, bathed and dried coat, then scissoring to a preferred 3–5 inches on the body, with longer head, ear and tail hair. That finish is one approach, rather than a compulsory length for every pet.
Regular handling
AKC guidance works through brushing and combing to the skin before the bathing and shaping sequence, then wetting and air drying to restore curls. Learn the sequence with a groomer rather than repeatedly cutting around tangles. Include regular nail care, ear checks and tooth brushing. A curly coat still needs hands-on inspection even when the chosen outline looks deliberately rustic.
Time and alternatives
The UK guide places exercise at up to an hour daily and grooming more than weekly. AKC suggests several daily walks, secure play and indoor games; water activity is an option, not a test every dog must pass. Compare the Lagotto’s tightly curled, regularly trimmed coat and the Portuguese Water Dog’s two coat types before choosing on appearance alone. Each has its own maintenance pattern.
