Beauceron: close coat care includes the rear dewclaws

The Beauceron is large and muscular without an exaggerated heavy outline. Its close double coat sheds, with more work needed during seasonal changes. Daily physical and mental activity is a substantial commitment even though the hair is much shorter than a shaggy sheepdog’s.

Size and a close-fitting coat

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give males 65–70 cm and females 61–68 cm at the shoulder, without a numerical weight here. The body is slightly longer than tall, with a straight back and broad, muscular loin.

Body hair is about 3–4 cm, thick and firm, lying over a fine, dense, downy undercoat. Hair is shorter on the head, with light fringes behind the thighs and beneath the tail. The UK medium-coat category should be read alongside this detailed close-coat description.

More brushing when the undercoat sheds

The AKC recommends weekly brushing, increasing to daily during the twice-yearly shedding periods. Suggested tools include a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt or hound glove. The earlier UK category is more than once weekly, so plan regular checks as well as the larger seasonal job.

The guide specifically includes trimming the rear double dewclaws as well as the other nails. Ear checks and frequent tooth brushing are part of its care advice too. Ask for a demonstration if the extra claws make nail handling unfamiliar.

Daily variety and owner time

The UK guide places exercise above two hours daily, with a large house and garden in the country. The AKC describes a need for varied physical and mental challenges, listing activities such as herding events, agility or carting. Explore suitable instruction and the individual dog’s interests rather than turning a list of activities into a training or performance promise.

Compare the day, not just the hair length

The Malinois has its own short-coat routine and seasonal slicker brushing, with a strong emphasis on owner participation. The Australian Cattle Dog is smaller in its own height description and has weekly-to-seasonal brush-outs. Both need time for seasonal brushing, while their different sizes affect handling and the outings you plan.
