Bedlington Terrier: a linty coat with regular clipping

The Bedlington’s linty coat, arched loin and slightly longer-than-high body create a distinctive outline. Coat maintenance is a separate commitment from daily activity, and its routine differs from hand-stripping a hard-coated terrier.

Shape and size

FCI height is about 41 cm, allowing slight variation below for females and above for males, without defining numeric female and male ranges. Weight is 8–10 kg. The earlier UK description uses the same wording and interval.

The coat is thick and linty, standing away from the skin with a tendency to twist, especially on the head and face. It is not wiry. The back arches naturally over the loin, with a definite tuck-up and a body slightly longer than high.

Clipping and brushing are different jobs

AKC care guidance describes clipping about every two months, using clippers and scissors, and brushing or combing once or twice weekly. Owners may learn the work or use a groomer. Ask how the outline will be maintained and what to do between appointments.

The UK overview lists weekly grooming. The AKC guide also includes regular nails and ear checks, plus daily tooth brushing. Put those tasks into the routine rather than equating a groomer’s appointment with all of the dog’s maintenance.

Walks, play and secure space

The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes regular exercise such as fetch or long walks, with a fenced yard and a leash for walks. Agility, tracking and other canine activities are further options to explore.

Plan the shared activity available through the week and adapt the workload to the dog’s age and condition. A manageable shoulder height does not by itself establish the amount of exercise an individual will need.

Compare texture, not just silhouette

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers have a soft, silky coat and a daily brush-and-comb routine. Dandie Dinmont Terriers combine a crisp outer coat with linty undercoat and a silky topknot. Those different textures call for their own grooming discussions, rather than one rule for every soft-looking terrier.
