Cairn Terrier: a rugged double coat with room for a slight wave

The Cairn Terrier has a level, medium-length back, deep ribs and small, pointed, upright ears in its FCI description. Its outer coat is harsh but not coarse, over a short, soft, close undercoat. The standard expressly permits a slight wave. The Westie has its own description of harsh, curl-free outer hair about 5 cm long.

Compare texture, not just the color

The Cairn standard allows several colors and brindling, with dark ears and muzzle described as typical. The West Highland White Terrier is white, with harsh outer hair about 5 cm long. The Scottish Terrier has a proportionately short back and a long-looking head, so its outline is another useful contrast beyond coat color.

AKC’s Cairn care guide recommends weekly brushing and combing, with periodic hand-stripping to maintain texture. It suggests a comb and soft slicker brush, and getting a puppy used to grooming sessions. That is practical coat care, rather than a promise that rugged-looking hair looks after itself.

A shared size category is only a starting point

The earlier UK guide lists grooming more than once a week, up to one hour of exercise, a flat or apartment and a small or medium garden, in town or country. The Westie shares these entries; the Scottie has daily grooming and a small-house category.

AKC describes daily outings and activities that engage both body and mind, including tracking or obedience work. Think about the outdoor routine and time for coat care together; the older home category alone cannot describe every household’s arrangements.

Approximate height, ideal weight and proportion

The FCI height is approximately 28–31 cm, in proportion to a weight ideally 6–7.5 kg. The height is approximate and the weight ideal, with their relationship part of the description. The Scottie’s 25–28 cm and 8.5–10.5 kg show why similar-looking small terriers should not share one set of figures.
