Catalan Sheepdog: rough coat and a changing moult
The Catalan Sheepdog has a rough, furnished coat over a body slightly longer than its height. Its beard and eyebrows should leave the eyes clear. Regular brushing and attention during moulting are useful practical commitments, rather than treating a rustic appearance as a reason to leave the coat unchecked.
Body and height
FCI gives male heights of 47–55 cm and female heights of 45–53 cm; the earlier UK guide describes the same ranges as ideals. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. Both describe a body proportion around 9:8 in length to height. Abundant hair at the hindquarters can make the croup appear higher, so assess the body beneath the coat as well as the visible outline.
The coat through a moult
FCI describes long, rough, flat or slightly waved hair, with substantial undercoat toward the rear of the body. It also describes moulting in two stages, first the front and then the hind part, temporarily producing different-looking halves. The UK account calls the coat medium-length and rough. Those descriptions help explain its changing appearance; a categorical shedding label should not replace watching the actual coat.
Brushing and washing
ADIGAC, the Catalan Sheepdog association, recommends weekly brushing and bathing when necessary with shampoo made for dogs. Its advice matches the earlier UK weekly grooming category without adding a compulsory tool or clipping programme. Learn how to work through the actual rough coat and its denser rear areas with someone experienced in the breed. The beard, furnishings and undercoat all deserve attention during a thorough session.
Activity and related profiles
The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily, with a small house and small or medium garden in town or country. ADIGAC advises adjusting activity to age. Include shared outings and play rather than assuming the coat or herding history describes an individual’s exercise plan. Compare the Long Haired and Smooth Faced Pyrenean profiles for their own coat lengths, proportions and care; geographical proximity does not make their grooming identical.
