Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: silky feathering and regular coat checks

The Cavalier has a compact body with long, silky hair and plenty of feathering. Regular brushing and ear checks form part of its routine. Daily walks and shared outdoor activity still need time alongside the coat care.

Weight descriptions without a height target

The FCI weight range is 5.4–8 kg, while the earlier UK guide gives 5.4–8.2 kg. Both favour a small, well-balanced dog within their ranges. Neither supplies a numerical shoulder height here, so keep the weight descriptions separate when comparing adult size.

The back is level and the body short-coupled, with well-sprung ribs. Long, silky hair may have a slight wave but should not be curly. The standard describes natural feathering, completely free from trimming; a show-coat description is separate from brushing out tangles.

Regular brushing and ear checks

The UK category is grooming more than once weekly. The AKC recommends regular brushing and occasional baths, using the session to look over the dog as well as working through the silky hair. Allow attention to the furnishings rather than only brushing the smooth-looking back.

The same care guide calls for weekly ear checks and nail trimming at least monthly. Include those handling tasks in the diary, and ask a groomer to demonstrate gentle work through feathering if the longer hair becomes difficult to manage.

Moderate activity with the owner

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC describes moderate walks and outdoor activity, recommending lead walks and a fenced area for loose exercise. Plan involvement with the individual dog rather than assuming a lap-dog history means no daily outings.

Compare two other feathered coats

The King Charles Spaniel has a lower weight range and its own pin-brush and comb routine. The Papillon has no undercoat and needs particular attention behind the ears and inside the hind legs. Similar silky hair does not make the full maintenance job identical.
