German Wirehaired Pointer: a close wire coat and active days

The German Wirehaired Pointer has harsh outer hair, dense undercoat and a defined beard. The coat should reveal the body beneath it. Regular combing, ear care and shared outdoor activity are practical commitments, rather than reasons to treat the dog as self-maintaining.

Nearly square beneath the wire

The FCI says body length and height should be as equal as possible, with body length allowed up to 3 cm longer. Its shoulder heights are 61–68 cm for males and 57–64 cm for females. The earlier UK ideal ranges differ at 60–67 cm and 56–62 cm.

The UK guide also supplies weights of 25–34 kg for males and 20.5–29 kg for females; the FCI section has no numerical weight. FCI outer hair is approximately 2–4 cm, harsh, dense and flat-lying over water-resistant undercoat. The UK describes an outer coat no longer than 4 cm.

Comb, slicker and smaller care jobs

The AKC recommends weekly work with a comb and soft slicker brush to remove dirt and loose hair. The UK category is more than once weekly. Work through the coat and furnishings rather than only brushing the beard into place.

The AKC also advises regular ear inspection and cleaning when needed, frequent nail trimming and tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs. Ask your vet about a suitable ear-cleaning product and technique. A groomer can show you how to reach the undercoat while keeping the short, harsh outer hair tidy.

Exercise with a partner

The earlier UK guide places exercise above two hours daily and describes a large country house and garden. The AKC suggests long walks, hikes and play with the owner, with tracking, agility and rally among possible activities. Consider both the time outdoors and the time for coat and ear checks afterwards.

Compare three distinct wire coats

The Wirehaired Vizsla has its own 2–3 cm FCI outer coat and a different damp-cloth and shedding-mitt routine. The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer has roughly 4 cm outer hair and a seasonal undercoat change. A beard does not make their size, care schedule or UK exercise categories interchangeable.
