Hungarian Mudi: wavy hair and a regular activity routine

The Mudi has upright ears, a slightly longer-than-tall body and a shiny coat that becomes wavy or lightly curly away from the head. Its grooming routine is comparatively straightforward. Regular shared activity and mental occupation still require owner time.

A compact frame beneath the waves

The FCI gives males 41–47 cm at the shoulder, with an ideal of 43–45 cm, and females 38–44 cm, ideal 40–42 cm. The earlier UK guide states those ideal ranges with 2 cm variation either way. Neither size section supplies numerical weight here.

The FCI body-length-to-height ratio is 103–105:100. Hair on the head and fronts of the legs is short and smooth; elsewhere it is dense, shiny, very wavy or slightly curled, about 3–7 cm long. It is not a Puli corded coat.

Remove dead hair without changing the texture

The AKC recommends occasional baths, combing or brushing to remove dead hair, and regular nail care. The earlier UK category is weekly grooming. Use the session to work through what the coat actually needs instead of treating its waves as a reason to apply another breed’s styling routine.

The longer hair behind the limbs and under the tail deserves a look as well as the smooth head. A groomer can help demonstrate gentle handling if dead hair or outdoor debris becomes difficult to remove.

Daily activity with something to learn

The UK guide places exercise up to one hour, with a small house and small or medium garden in the country. The AKC describes an energetic dog that enjoys running, mentioning flyball, herding and disc games as possible activities. Choose a secure setting and introduce suitable activities with instruction, rather than assuming a sporting list guarantees aptitude or an easy training experience.

Compare three different Hungarian coats

The Pumi has a tufted, curly coat with a comb-then-wet routine that restores the curls. The Puli’s developing cords are separated by hand. These are distinct methods; the Mudi’s waves do not call for either cording or the Pumi’s precise grooming cycle.
