Hungarian Pumi: comb, wet and let the curls return
The Pumi is square in outline with a tufted, wavy and curly coat. Maintaining those curls is more specific than simply brushing the dog smooth. Regular exercise and mental activity also matter alongside the grooming cycle.
Ranges and ideals have separate meanings
The FCI gives males 41–47 cm, ideal 43–45 cm, and 10–15 kg, ideal 12–13 kg. Females are 38–44 cm, ideal 40–42 cm, and 8–13 kg, ideal 10–11 kg. The earlier UK guide states the ideal ranges with tolerances of 2 cm and 2 kg either way.
Height and body length are equal. The elastic, dense coat is about 4–7 cm long, combining stronger outer hair and soft undercoat. It forms tufts rather than cords; the upper third of the otherwise upright ears bends forward.
Combing is followed by wetting
The AKC guide recommends combing every three to six weeks, followed by a thorough wetting so the coat curls back up. Once curled, it can be trimmed neatly. The guide advises against blow-drying because that removes the characteristic curls.
The earlier UK grooming category is weekly, so keep regular coat checks between those fuller comb-and-wet sessions. Hair can come out during grooming even though the UK shedding category is No. Ask a groomer familiar with Pumik to show you the finish rather than treating that category as a promise of no loose hair.
An active routine in a small home
The UK guide allows a small house and small or medium garden in town or country, with exercise up to one hour. The AKC recommends regular physical and mental activity and mentions chase-and-fetch games with balls or discs. Introduce suitable play and training with the individual dog rather than assuming small size means a passive routine.
Compare the neighbouring Hungarian profiles
The Mudi has a wavy, shiny coat with occasional combing or brushing and bathing in its guide. The Puli has a cord-forming coat with a separate hand-maintenance process. Neither is the Pumi’s comb-wet-trim cycle under another name.
