Kooikerhondje: natural feathering and regular handling

The Kooikerhondje has an almost square body, orange-red patches and a feathered tail. Its own AKC care page uses the name Nederlandse Kooikerhondje. That source supplies practical coat, ear, nail and tooth care, while the UK guide provides the daily exercise category used here.

Ideal heights and tolerances

FCI gives ideal heights of 40 cm for males and 38 cm for females, with a tolerance of 2 cm above or 3 cm below those ideals. The earlier UK guide states 37–42 cm for males and 35–40 cm for females. Keep the ideal and tolerance wording alongside its source. Neither provides a numerical weight here. The body can be slightly longer than its height, above a strong, straight back.

An untrimmed outline

The UK guide describes medium-long, straight or slightly waved hair, close fitting, with developed undercoat and a well-feathered tail. Feathering on the hind legs stops above the hocks, while the head and fronts of the legs carry shorter hair. FCI describes the outer hair as soft; the UK wording says it should not be too fine. A natural outline is different from a sculpted or routinely clipped pet finish.

Practical coat and other care

AKC suggests regular weekly grooming and occasional baths, alongside regular nail trimming or grinding, ear checks and tooth brushing. The UK grooming category is more than weekly. Allow handling between fuller sessions, with particular attention to feathering and undercoat. Ask a knowledgeable groomer to demonstrate how to maintain the natural coat instead of choosing a trim simply because another feathered breed is usually clipped.

Daily activity and comparison

The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily, with a small house and small or medium garden in town or country. The AKC exercise section is descriptive rather than a numerical prescription. Plan shared outings and play around the individual dog. Compare the Dalmatian’s larger body and activity category, or the Tibetan Spaniel’s smaller size and silky coat, using each breed’s own care rather than the shared presence of feathering.
