Long Haired Dachshund: feathering and daily outings

The Long Haired Dachshund combines a low, muscular body with flat-lying hair and feathering on the ears, legs and tail. This profile covers the larger UK variety. Its coat needs more attention than a smooth coat, while the long body calls for thoughtful handling during ordinary household activity.

The UK size description

The earlier UK guide gives an ideal weight of 9–12 kg. It describes a moderately long, well-muscled body with enough clearance to move freely, rather than an exaggerated outline dragging on the ground. Neither a numerical adult height nor a compulsory feeding target follows from that weight description. The Miniature Long Haired profile has its own UK weight wording.

Why international sizes differ

The FCI Dachshund family uses chest circumference measured at at least 15 months, from the highest point of the withers to the lowest point of the chest with a slightly tensioned tape. Its Standard category is over 37 up to 47 cm for males and over 35 up to 45 cm for females. FCI also has Miniature and Rabbit categories. These chest classes do not convert directly into the UK weight classes.

Looking after the feathering

The UK coat description is soft and straight or slightly waved, longest under the neck and body, behind the legs and on the tail. AKC guidance says long coats may need more frequent brushing depending on thickness, while the UK category is more than weekly. Work through the feathering rather than only smoothing the back, and include monthly nail trimming and regular ear checks and cleaning.

Outings and comparison

The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily. AKC suggests two moderate walks daily and avoiding running up and down stairs or jumping on and off furniture. Think about those everyday routes as well as the walk itself. Compare the Miniature Long Haired for its separate size description, and the Smooth Haired for the difference between feathered hair and a short coat.
