Miniature Long Haired Dachshund: small size, feathered coat

The Miniature Long Haired Dachshund has the same recognisable low outline and feathered coat as the larger long-haired variety, with a separate UK size description. Smaller size reduces neither the need to work through longer hair nor the value of regular outings beyond running around inside the home.

Ideal and desired maximum

The earlier UK guide gives an ideal weight of 4.5 kg and a desired maximum of 5 kg, while rejecting a thin, undernourished appearance. These are standard descriptions, not instructions to make every dog weigh the same. The body is moderately long, with a strong loin and adequate clearance for free movement; coat volume should not prevent checking the underlying outline.

Chest measurement is a different system

The FCI family measures chest circumference at at least 15 months, with the tape running from the highest withers point to the lowest chest point under slight tension. Its Miniature category is over 32 up to 37 cm for males and over 30 up to 35 cm for females. Standard and Rabbit are separate FCI categories. A UK Miniature label based on weight is not an automatic chest-class conversion.

Long-hair upkeep

Soft, flat-lying hair becomes longer beneath the neck and body, behind the legs, around the ears and on the tail. The UK grooming category is more than weekly; AKC describes brushing long coats according to their thickness. Check the feathered areas as part of each thorough session. Its shared Dachshund guidance also calls for monthly nail trimming; regular ear inspection and cleaning remain practical tasks alongside coat work.

An ordinary daily routine

The UK category allows up to an hour of exercise daily. AKC recommends two moderate walks and avoiding stair-running and jumps on or off furniture. Plan how the dog moves through the home, as well as access to outside space. Compare the larger Long Haired profile for its distinct weight wording, or the Miniature Smooth Haired for a shorter coat without assuming that the daily outings disappear.
