Miniature Poodle: size boundaries and everyday coat work

The Miniature Poodle has a dense curly coat and an elegant outline, with a UK height category that differs from the international FCI class of the same name. The practical choice between a full coat and a shorter pet trim affects how much hair must be worked through each day.

Two height systems

The earlier UK guide places Miniatures at 28 cm and above but under 38 cm at the shoulder. FCI’s family standard instead gives Miniature as over 28 up to 35 cm, with an additional Medium class over 35 up to 45 cm. Those boundaries overlap the UK categories rather than matching them exactly. Neither source supplies a numerical weight here, and matching names do not settle an individual dog’s registration category.

Coat and presentation

The UK guide describes profuse, dense hair of good harsh texture, with close curls and sufficient length to assess color and quality in the show ring. FCI also describes a corded coat, separately from curls. The AKC Miniature care guidance used here concerns brushing a full coat or maintaining a shorter trim; a brushed-out curly coat and an intentionally corded presentation need different handling.

Work through the coat

AKC advises daily brushing and combing completely to the skin for a full coat, where tangles can otherwise form near the roots. It describes professional appointments every four to six weeks for bathing, grooming and nails as a common pet choice. A shorter trim changes the amount of hair, but still needs an agreed between-appointment routine. Ask the groomer to demonstrate the work on the actual coat rather than relying on its surface appearance.

Daily activity and comparison

The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily, with daily grooming and a small house and small or medium garden. AKC stresses daily activity for Poodles of any size, through shared walks and play. Compare the Standard and Toy profiles using their own height wording and the time involved in coat care. Smaller stature does not turn grooming appointments into a replacement for daily handling.
