Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund: short-coat care

The Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund has short, close hair over a compact, low body. Its grooming differs from the long and wire coats, but a short coat still leaves nails, ears and everyday activity to manage. The UK Miniature size wording is separate from international chest-measurement classes.

Size and body outline

The earlier UK guide gives an ideal weight of 4.5 kg and a desired maximum of 5 kg; a thin, undernourished appearance is unacceptable. It describes a moderately long, muscular body with sufficient ground clearance, not an extremely stretched silhouette. Use the standard to understand the variety while assessing the individual dog’s condition with appropriate advice, rather than pursuing a number by restricting food.

A different international measurement

FCI measures the Dachshund chest at at least 15 months, from the highest point of the withers to the lowest chest point with a slightly tensioned tape. Its Miniature category is over 32 up to 37 cm for males and over 30 up to 35 cm for females, alongside Standard and Rabbit classes. That system cannot be read as a direct replacement for the UK ideal and desired maximum weights.

Keeping the smooth coat tidy

The UK description is dense, short and smooth, with coarser hair beneath the tail. Its grooming category is weekly. AKC describes a towel or hound glove for the smooth coat, rather than the more frequent brushing of long hair or the stripping option for wire hair. Include monthly nail trimming, regular ear checks and cleaning. A quick surface wipe is only the coat part of that handling routine.

Walks and household activity

The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily; AKC suggests two moderate walks, rather than relying on movement around the house. Its advice also avoids running stairs and jumping on or off furniture. Consider access to favorite resting places as well as outdoor routes. The Miniature Long Haired and Miniature Wire Haired profiles help compare coat work without confusing it with a different miniature weight definition.
