Miniature Wire Haired Dachshund: harsh coat and furnishings

The Miniature Wire Haired Dachshund has a harsh outer coat, dense undercoat and distinctive beard and eyebrows. This is a different grooming proposition from the smooth or long coats. A manageable routine includes work between grooming appointments, rather than treating occasional stripping as the whole care plan.

UK miniature size

The earlier UK guide gives an ideal weight of 4.5 kg and a desired maximum of 5 kg, explicitly rejecting a thin or undernourished appearance. Its moderately long, muscular body needs clearance for free movement. The larger Wire Haired variety has a different ideal weight; neither size description should be turned into a requirement to slim every individual to the same number.

Separate FCI chest classes

The FCI family uses chest circumference at at least 15 months, measured from the highest withers point to the lowest chest point with slight tape tension. FCI Miniature males are over 32 up to 37 cm and females over 30 up to 35 cm. Standard and Rabbit are additional chest classes. These international names do not establish an exact match to the UK weight-based Miniature description.

Brushing and the stripping option

UK describes short, straight, harsh hair over dense undercoat, with beard, bushy brows and almost smooth ear hair. AKC suggests brushing or combing once or twice weekly, occasional beard and eyebrow trimming, and plucking or hand stripping several times yearly for the wire coat’s appearance. Discuss that finish with a breed-experienced groomer. The UK more-than-weekly category remains useful for planning regular handling between fuller grooming sessions.

Daily handling and outings

AKC calls for monthly nail trimming and supports keeping the ears clean. Its exercise guidance suggests two moderate walks daily and avoiding stair-running and jumps from furniture; the UK category is up to an hour daily. Include both outings and household access in the plan. Compare the Miniature Smooth Haired for less furnishing hair, or the larger Wire Haired for a separate size description with the same explicitly wire-specific grooming guidance.
