Papillon: fine furnishings without a dense undercoat
The Papillon has a slightly long frame and flowing furnishings without undercoat. Smaller comb-throughs between full grooming sessions matter, especially behind the ears and around the hindquarters. Daily shared play still needs time even where the home has no garden.
Approximate height and separate weight categories
The FCI gives height about 28 cm. Its weight categories are below 2.5 kg for either sex, or 2.5–4.5 kg for males and 2.5–5 kg for females, with a minimum of 1.5 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives height 20–28 cm without numerical weight.
The body is somewhat longer than tall. FCI describes abundant, slightly resistant, wavy hair with silky reflections, not a curly coat and without undercoat. The UK description likewise has no undercoat, with longer ear, chest, tail and thigh furnishings.
Small checks between fuller grooming sessions
The AKC separates roughly monthly full grooming from shorter comb or soft-slicker sessions between appointments. It particularly identifies hair inside the hind legs, behind the ears and on the thigh furnishings as places to check for mats. The UK category is grooming more than once weekly.
The same guide suggests baths every few months or when dirty, regular nail trimming including the dewclaw, and regular tooth brushing. Include the smaller handling jobs and mat checks rather than reading monthly full grooming as a reason to leave the coat unchecked.
Shared play and suitable surroundings
The UK exercise category is up to half an hour and permits a flat or apartment without a garden in either setting. The AKC emphasises play with the owner and supervising interactions with larger animals. Plan activity and comfortable handling areas even when there is no private outdoor space.
Compare two other furnished coats
The Lowchen has long wavy hair and a choice of trims, with its own regular brushing and grooming visits. The Cavalier has different silky feathering and weekly ear checks. Neither coat should be treated as a dense-undercoat job simply because the hair looks full.
