Shetland Sheepdog: check behind the ears and under the elbows

The Shetland Sheepdog has a small frame beneath a substantial mane, frill and feathering. Regular checks of the denser areas are part of coat care, with more work during shedding. Its own size and proportions deserve attention rather than treating it as a miniature Rough Collie.

Small size under a long double coat

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give ideal heights of 37 cm for males and 35.5 cm for females; more than 2.5 cm above or below is highly undesirable. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. The body is slightly longer than tall.

Long, harsh, straight outer hair covers short, soft, close undercoat. The coat should fit the body rather than dominate its outline. The face is smooth, with abundant neck hair and feathering above the hocks.

Find the places that mat

The AKC recommends weekly brushing and more frequent work during shedding. It specifically names the areas behind the ears, under the front elbows and in the hair beneath the tail as places to check for mats. Work through those areas gently rather than judging the coat only by its outer surface.

The UK guide uses daily grooming. Shorter checks between full brush-throughs can therefore form part of the week. The AKC also recommends occasional baths and regular nail trimming. Ask for help with firmly tangled hair instead of pulling through a painful mat.

Outings and shared occupation

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a small house and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC describes moderate activity and includes city homes when enough exercise is provided, suggesting outings that engage mind and body. Assess the dog’s actual routine rather than relying on a general adaptability label.

Compare the grooming and exercise commitments

The Rough Collie is larger in its own height description and uses its own thorough undercoat and feathering routine. The Australian Shepherd has a different medium-length coat and a higher UK exercise category. Their similar feathered appearance does not settle which weekly routine fits your household.
