Smooth Coat Chihuahua: short hair with regular routine care

The Smooth Coat Chihuahua has a close, glossy coat over a compact frame. Body brushing is simpler than for the long-haired variety, but nails, ears and teeth still need attention. Daily walks and play should fit the pace of the actual dog.

Shared weight guidance, a different coat

FCI standard 218 gives both Chihuahua varieties an overall weight of 1–3 kg, with 1.5–2.5 kg ideal and no numerical height. The earlier UK description instead gives a maximum of 2.7 kg, with 1.8–2.7 kg preferred. These are separate source descriptions.

The back is level and the body slightly longer than tall. Smooth outer hair is short, soft and close, with longer hair possible around the neck and tail. The UK description permits undercoat and a ruff; short hair does not mean a hairless coat.

Occasional brushing is one part of the job

The AKC’s shared Chihuahua guide explicitly gives the smooth coat occasional brushing and regular baths, while reserving at-least-weekly brushing for the long-haired variety. The UK category is weekly grooming, which provides a regular opportunity to look over the short coat and the rest of the dog.

The same guide includes regular nail trimming, ear checks for excess wax or debris, and tooth brushing for both coats. Make room for that handling even when the body hair needs only a brief brush-through.

Walk at the dog’s pace

The UK exercise category is up to half an hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC describes play and short, slow walks, warning against overexertion. Plan breaks or a shorter return route when the dog is working hard to keep pace, rather than treating the category as a fixed distance.

Compare short and feathered coats

The Long Coat Chihuahua carries a ruff, plume and leg feathering that need their own brushing. The Miniature Pinscher has a square outline, an explicit height range and weekly soft-brush or hound-glove care. Compare those practical differences alongside their shared need for daily involvement.
