Standard Poodle: height, coat finish and shared activity

The Standard Poodle’s substantial curly coat needs an owner who can manage work between grooming appointments. A shorter pet trim offers a different outline from a full coat, while the UK Standard height definition is broader than the similarly named category in the international FCI family standard.

What Standard means here

The earlier UK guide defines Standard as over 38 cm at the shoulder. FCI instead states over 45 up to 60 cm, with a separate upper tolerance of 2 cm, and includes a Medium class over 35 up to 45 cm. The UK threshold is therefore not the FCI lower boundary. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. Keep those class definitions in mind when reading descriptions from different countries.

The body beneath the hair

The UK account describes a deep, moderately wide chest, well-sprung ribs and a short, strong back. FCI describes a body slightly longer than its height with a taut, harmonious topline. A dense coat and an elaborate trim can make the outline hard to judge. The practical pet finish you choose can remain simple without turning a show trim into a compulsory household style.

Grooming between appointments

AKC’s Standard page advises daily brushing and combing to the skin for a full coat. It describes a shorter trim as common among pet owners, with professional bathing, grooming and nail appointments every four to six weeks. Agree how to maintain the chosen length between visits. The earlier UK daily grooming category remains a useful time commitment; a salon appointment does not work through the coat during the intervening weeks.

Making room for activity

The UK guide lists up to an hour of exercise daily and a large house and garden. AKC describes good daily activity for Poodles of any size, including walks and shared play. Choose activities for the individual rather than expecting a coat style to indicate its routine. Compare the Miniature and Toy profiles for their separate size boundaries, while considering both the grooming work and daily involvement each would need.
