Tibetan Terrier: long-coat care matched to the individual

The Tibetan Terrier has a long double coat over a generally square, sturdy body. Its name does not prescribe the stripping routine of a wire-coated terrier. Coat texture and the chosen pet finish matter when planning regular care, particularly for a dog that spends much of its time outdoors.

Size and the body beneath

Both FCI and the earlier UK guide give male heights of 36–41 cm, with females slightly smaller. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. Length from the shoulder to the tail root equals height at the withers, with a level topline, strong body and short, slightly arched loin. A profuse coat can obscure that outline, so judge body proportions separately from the amount of hair.

Different layers and textures

The undercoat is fine and woolly, while the long outer coat is fine but neither silky nor woolly. It can be straight or waved, rather than curly. AKC notes that texture and tendency to mat vary between dogs. That makes a demonstration on the actual coat more useful than copying a tool list or fixed washing calendar from a Lhasa Apso or another long-coated breed.

Choosing a manageable finish

The UK grooming category is daily. AKC discusses a puppy cut as a practical option when a full coat gets in the way of outdoor activity, while recognising the value of regular grooming and observation. Discuss the chosen finish and its upkeep with a knowledgeable groomer. The source does not set a compulsory bathing or clipping interval, and a shorter finish should still leave time for regular coat checks.

Daily activity and comparison

The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily, with a small house and small or medium garden. AKC describes walks and outdoor time shared with the owner, noting individual variation in drive for activity. Include that shared time alongside grooming. The Lhasa Apso has a lower ideal height and a different heavy coat, while the Tibetan Spaniel has its own silky feathering and natural-trim guidance. Compare the care of each rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
