Whippet: smaller dimensions with a fine, close coat
The Whippet offers a smaller scale than the Greyhound while retaining a deep chest and a graceful arch over the loin. Its fine, short coat makes the grooming task different from that of a feathered or rough-coated hound.
Balanced proportions
The FCI standard describes a broad, firm back and a graceful arch over the loin, rather than an exaggerated hump. The deep chest and tuck-up contribute to the outline, but the overall emphasis is on balance and avoiding exaggeration.
FCI desirable height is 47–51 cm for males and 44–47 cm for females, matching the ranges in the earlier UK description. The standard gives no numeric weight range. Smaller dimensions are useful for planning space and transport, but cannot decide suitability for a particular home on their own.
A weekly grooming routine
The UK guide lists weekly grooming. AKC care advice describes weekly brushing and occasional bathing, with regular nail care and ear checks. Fine, short, close hair does not require the feathering care of a Saluki or the coat work of a Borzoi.
Build those small maintenance tasks into a regular routine, including checking how the nails are wearing. The amount of hair to brush is only one part of grooming; the ears and nails still need attention between baths.
Exercise beyond home size
The UK guide lists up to one hour of daily exercise, a small house, a small or medium garden, and either town or country. AKC describes walks, shared ball or disc play several times a week and activity in a secure enclosure, with a leash outside enclosed space. Lure coursing and agility are further options to explore.
Those examples make it possible to plan more than a walk around the block, without prescribing the same activity for every age and condition. Look at the actual walking and play opportunities available rather than assuming a small-home category means little exercise.
Compare size and shape
Greyhound ideal height ranges are substantially taller than the Whippet’s desirable ranges, although both have close coats. The Cirneco dell’Etna offers a different comparison: its FCI outline is square, with male height 46–50 cm and female height 44–48 cm. Similar heights therefore do not imply the same proportions or registry classification.
