Miniature Xoloitzcuintle: small size, two coat forms

The Miniature Xoloitzcuintle is the smallest UK size in this group, with the same slightly elongated proportions as the larger varieties. Hairless and short-coated dogs both occur. The amount of visible hair changes the grooming tasks, rather than removing the need for regular handling and shared activity.

Own height category

The earlier UK guide and FCI both give 25–35 cm for the Miniature. Neither gives a numerical weight here. The body is approximately 10:9 in length to height, with a firm, level back and a deep ribcage. AKC’s family page also names a Toy size in its own system; that label does not rename this UK Miniature profile or establish a country-to-country size conversion.

Recognising the two forms

The hairless form is completely or almost completely without hair, sometimes with short coarse tufts in specified areas. The coated form has short, flat hair without undercoat. UK describes hair longer than 2.5 cm as undesirable. The coat distinction matters in everyday care: brushing a short coat and checking exposed skin are different jobs, even though both dogs share the same general body type.

Grooming and skin checks

AKC suggests occasional brushing for coated dogs, weekly grooming and occasional bathing, together with regular nail trimming. Exposed skin needs consideration during prolonged direct sunlight; discuss suitable protection with a veterinarian. Young hairless dogs may need individual skin advice rather than an automatic adult routine. Regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste are supported by the same breed’s practical health guidance. These tasks still matter when there is little hair to brush.

Daily life and alternatives

The UK categories include flat or apartment living, a small or medium garden, weekly grooming and up to an hour of exercise daily. AKC describes long walks and upbeat play shared with the owner. Space inside a flat does not describe those outings. Compare the Intermediate and Standard profiles using their own heights and home categories, and ask about caring for the actual hairless or coated dog rather than choosing solely by size.
