Standard Xoloitzcuintle: size and care for either coat form

The Standard Xoloitzcuintle is the largest UK size in this group, with a firm, level back and a body a little longer than its height. Hairless and coated forms share that overall outline. Their day-to-day care differs, so a photograph of a bare-skinned dog does not describe every Xolo coat.

Height and a conditional allowance

Both the earlier UK guide and FCI give a Standard height of 46–60 cm. FCI adds an upper tolerance of 2 cm only for top-quality dogs; the UK main range remains separately stated. Neither gives a numerical weight here. The body is approximately 10:9 in length to height. Intermediate and Miniature are separate sizes, rather than smaller dogs to include under the Standard height description.

Hair and exposed skin

Hairless dogs may have short coarse tufts on the forehead, neck, feet and tail. The coated form has a short, flat covering without undercoat. UK describes hair over 2.5 cm as undesirable. FCI distinguishes dentition between the forms as part of its standard; a show-rule allowance for missing teeth should not be taken as an assessment of an individual dog’s dental comfort or care needs.

Maintaining either form

AKC’s Xolo guidance covers both forms, suggesting occasional brushing for coated dogs, weekly grooming, occasional bathing and regular nail trimming. It highlights protection for hairless skin during prolonged direct sun. Discuss suitable products and any skin irritation with a veterinarian; the source does not provide a universal lotion or bathing formula. Include regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste, as supported by its practical health guidance.

Activity and comparisons

The UK category is up to an hour of daily exercise, weekly grooming and a small house with a small or medium garden. AKC describes long walks and shared play. Those routines involve time with the owner as well as suitable space. Compare the Intermediate and Miniature profiles on their own heights and home categories, while planning grooming around whether the individual dog is hairless or coated.
