Anatolian Shepherd Dog: coat care and separate size descriptions
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog has a large, powerful body with a substantial undercoat. This guide follows the UK Anatolian entry and separately explains the US standard’s broader coat description. Regular handling and controlled shared outings matter alongside the space needed for a large dog.
UK and US measurements
The earlier UK guide gives male heights of 74–81 cm and mature weights of 50–64 kg, with females at 71–79 cm and 41–59 kg. The US standard instead starts male height at 29 inches and female height at 27 inches, with proportional weights of 110–150 lb and 80–120 lb. Those US measurements apply at age two or older and prioritise balance. They are not maximum heights or a puppy growth target.
Different coat descriptions
UK describes short, dense, close-lying outer hair and thick undercoat, without feathering on ears or legs. The US standard also allows rougher outer hair around four inches long and feathering in several areas. Keep those descriptions separate when asking about a particular dog’s coat. The Turkish Kangal has its own profile and standard description rather than supplying a substitute coat or size definition.
Regular and seasonal care
AKC’s Anatolian care guidance suggests weekly brushing, with a thorough short-bristle brushing and possibly a comb every few days during twice-yearly undercoat shedding. It also recommends regular nail trimming. Its practical health guidance supports regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing. The UK grooming category is more than weekly, so allow handling between fuller sessions, particularly while loose undercoat is coming away.
Outings and comparisons
The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily and lists a large country home and garden. AKC instead describes moderate exercise, a long walk once or twice daily and securely fenced space with a locked gate. Those descriptions are not one numerical dose. Its advice keeps the dog on a lead away from home. Compare the separate Kangal profile or the smaller Catalan Sheepdog by their own dimensions and coat work.
