Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen: longer lines and a rough coat
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen has straight forelegs, a slightly elongated body and a hard coat that should retain a natural appearance. It is a distinct comparison with the Petit, rather than simply the same dog measured on a larger scale.
A basset outline without exaggerated length
The FCI standard calls for a long, broad, straight back, a solid, slightly arched loin and an overall basset structure without excessive body length. The coat is hard and flat, not overly long, silky or woolly. Eyebrows are pronounced but should not obscure the eyes; feathering is not abundant.
FCI height is 40–44 cm for males and 39–43 cm for females, with a separate allowance of 1 cm above or below. The earlier UK description gives the same ranges and tolerance, and describes a thick undercoat. The FCI standard gives no numeric weight range.
Two grooming frequencies to consider
The earlier UK overview lists daily grooming. AKC care guidance instead describes a weekly brushing with a slicker and comb, occasional bathing, regular nails, ear checks and tooth brushing. The difference is useful when asking a breeder or groomer to demonstrate the routine for a particular coat.
The UK description allows tidying while retaining a rustic appearance. A show presentation preference is separate from working out how to remove dirt, loose hair and tangles comfortably in everyday care.
Exercise needs a practical plan
The UK guide pairs more than two hours of exercise with a small house, large garden and country setting. AKC stresses providing plenty of exercise and a securely fenced area. Identify where walks and enclosed activity can happen rather than treating the garden as the whole routine.
Build time for activity into the week and adjust it as the dog’s age and condition change. The amount of floor space at home and access to suitable outdoor activity are separate parts of the decision.
Related rough-coated hounds
The Petit has an FCI height of 34–38 cm, compared with 40–44 cm for Grand males and 39–43 cm for Grand females. Otterhounds offer a much larger rough-coated comparison, with a 4–8 cm double coat that is harsh but not wiry. Comparing those coat details is more useful than grouping every shaggy hound under one grooming plan.
