Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen: a rustic coat that needs a thorough brush
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a short-legged, slightly elongated hound with a harsh coat. Its tousled appearance still involves regular work: a complete brush-out and attention to the coat’s condition matter more than making it look sculpted.
Smaller than the Grand, with its own proportions
FCI height is 34–38 cm without separate male and female intervals, with a separate allowance of 1 cm either side. The earlier UK description gives the same height guidance and describes body length at approximately 7:5 to height. FCI calls the body slightly elongated; the UK ratio is a more specific description from that guide.
The FCI coat is harsh but not too long, neither silky nor woolly. The UK description adds a thick undercoat and asks for a natural appearance when tidied for showing. Neither description means neglecting the coat between outings.
Brush through, then check with a comb
The UK grooming category is more than once a week. AKC recommends a complete brushing-out at least weekly, followed by checking that a comb passes through easily. It advises minimal trimming and describes a commonly used monthly bathing and grooming routine that includes nail care.
Weekly ear checks are also part of that care guidance. A groomer can demonstrate how to work through the actual coat and decide what tidying is appropriate; the Grand’s grooming categories should not be copied across just because the names are similar.
Walks and room to explore
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise daily, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes an active dog needing room to explore, with a leash for exercise outside the yard because of the urge to follow scents.
Use that advice to plan walking routes and enclosed activity, adapting the routine to age and condition. The UK hour category is broad guidance, not a ceiling on all activity or a promise about how much an individual dog will need.
Compare texture and scale
Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen have taller, sex-specific FCI ranges and longer lines. Basset Fauve de Bretagne are lower in their main FCI range and have a very rough, rather short coat. Compare the actual grooming demonstration and daily activity arrangements alongside those measurements.
