Basset Hound: substantial build and regular, moderate exercise
The Basset Hound is low to the ground but has considerable substance. Its short coat and moderate exercise guidance still call for a regular routine, with enough room to move comfortably and time set aside for loose-hair removal.
Low does not mean exaggerated
The FCI standard describes a long, deep body, broad level back and adequate clearance between the chest and the ground. Skin and body length should avoid exaggeration. These are points of breed conformation, not a prediction of an individual dog’s health or mobility.
Height at the withers is 33–38 cm, without separate intervals for males and females. The standard does not give a numeric weight range. Its coat is smooth, short and close, not overly fine, with no feathering.
Short hair still needs brushing
The earlier UK grooming category is weekly. AKC care guidance recommends a gentle brush at least once a week using a soft brush or shedding tool, and notes that short hair can shed heavily. Regular nail care and occasional bathing are also included.
The same AKC guide recommends frequent ear checks and tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs at least twice a week. Head shaking or scratching at the ears is a reason to seek veterinary advice. Include those checks alongside the weekly coat routine.
A steady walking routine
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise daily, a large house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes regular, moderate exercise, usually a daily walk at a moderate pace. A predictable walking routine is a more useful starting point than assuming the dog will supply its own activity in a garden.
The home-size category should prompt a look at the layout: space for resting, turning and moving through doors, as well as the route outdoors. Adapt the activity plan to the individual dog rather than using a height figure to set its workload.
Two other basset comparisons
Basset Bleu de Gascogne have an FCI height of 34–38 cm but a different body ratio and a UK exercise category of more than two hours. Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen have a rough coat with a thorough brushing routine. Similar shoulder heights can therefore lead to quite different coat and activity decisions.
