Bearded Collie: daily detangling and a longer weekly groom
The Bearded Collie’s shaggy coat covers a lean, longer-than-tall frame. Maintenance has two distinct parts: brief daily attention and a fuller weekly session. Both need a place in the week, alongside walks, play and other shared activity.
Proportions beneath the shaggy hair
The FCI and earlier UK guide give an approximate body-length-to-height ratio of 5:4, with females sometimes a little longer. Ideal heights are 53–56 cm for males and 51–53 cm for females. Both put overall quality and proportions before exact height, while discouraging excessive variation.
The outer hair is flat, harsh and shaggy, with a soft close undercoat. A slight wave is allowed, but the coat should not become woolly or curly or hide the natural body lines. The beard grows from the cheeks and chin towards the chest.
Two different grooming sessions
The AKC describes daily brushing for tangles and material brought in from outside, often taking five to ten minutes when the dog is not particularly dirty. It adds a weekly session with a pin rake, brush and comb, possibly detangling spray, taking roughly half an hour to an hour. These are planning estimates, not a guarantee for a wet or tangled coat.
Regular nail trimming, ear checks and daily tooth brushing are also supported by its care guidance. The UK daily grooming category therefore represents more than smoothing the visible top hair. Ask a groomer to show you how to reach the denser layer.
A daily outing as well as coat work
The UK category is up to one hour of exercise, with a large house and garden in either setting. The AKC suggests ball play, walks, hikes or shared activity in a fenced area. Allow for both the outing and the grooming afterwards when deciding what fits your normal day.
Compare long coats that need different hands
The Rough Collie has a harsh straight outer coat and specific mat-prone areas behind ears and elbows. The Puli’s corded coat is maintained by separating developing cords rather than applying the Beardie’s brush-and-comb routine. Long hair is not one grooming method.
