Malinois: a short coat does not mean a small daily commitment

The Malinois has a square, athletic-looking body and a short, dense coat. Routine coat care is relatively simple, with more work during shedding. The larger daily demand is active participation with the owner, involving both physical activity and something to learn or do.

Short hair within the Belgian standard

FCI standard 15 gives shared ideal heights of 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females, allowing 2 cm below or 4 cm above, with approximate weights of 25–30 kg and 20–25 kg. The earlier UK guide gives ideal height ranges of 61–66 cm and 56–61 cm, with weight in proportion to size.

The Malinois is the short-haired variety: hair is especially short on the head, ears and lower limbs, fuller at the neck and tail, with longer fringes behind the thighs. The tail is not plumed. This detailed description is more specific than the UK overview’s medium-coat category.

Occasional brushing becomes daily during shedding

The AKC recommends occasional brushing with a medium-bristle brush, rubber mitt or hound glove. During the twice-yearly shedding periods it suggests a daily slicker once-over. The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly, so retain time for ordinary checks too.

Regular nail trimming, ear checks and frequent tooth brushing are also part of the breed guide. Short hair can make the surface look neat while loose undercoat still needs removing.

Plan active time together

The UK guide places exercise above two hours daily, with a large house and garden in town or country. The AKC describes walks or backyard access alone as insufficient, suggesting shared running, hiking and activities such as tracking or agility. Plan both exercise and training time with suitable instruction, adjusting activities as you learn what the individual dog can manage.

Compare the coat methods

The Laekenois has roughly 6 cm rough hair and its own regular-grooming advice. The Tervueren has long outer hair over dense undercoat, with pin, slicker and seasonal rake work. A shared standard for the Belgian body does not replace those separate care descriptions.
