Groenendael: long black hair with a busy shedding season
The Groenendael has a square body beneath long black outer hair, a ruff and a plumed tail. Its ordinary weekly brush-through becomes a daily job during heavy shedding. Activity also needs owner involvement, rather than leaving the dog to occupy itself outside.
Its place in the Belgian standard
FCI standard 15 describes four Belgian Shepherd varieties. For this long-haired black variety, the shared ideal height is 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females, allowing 2 cm below or 4 cm above. Approximate weights are 25–30 kg and 20–25 kg respectively.
The earlier UK guide instead gives ideal height ranges of 61–66 cm and 56–61 cm, with weight proportional to size. The body is square, with a firm short back. Long, smooth outer hair and woolly undercoat form the ruff, leg fringes and tail plume.
An ordinary week and a coat blow
The AKC Belgian Sheepdog guide supplies the Groenendael care advice here. It recommends weekly brushing for most of the year and infrequent baths unless dirty. During heavy shedding, occurring at least yearly in that guide, it calls for thorough daily brushing to remove dead hair.
The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Keep time for shorter checks between full sessions, along with regular nail trimming, ear checks and tooth brushing. A tidy surface does not show how much loose undercoat remains below it.
Exercise together
The UK guide places activity above two hours daily, with a large house and garden in town or country. The AKC suggests ball play, running or activities such as tracking and agility with the owner. A garden can provide space, but its guidance explicitly expects participation rather than simply leaving the dog outdoors.
Compare the other Belgian coats
The Tervueren is also long-haired, with a different color description and its own pin-and-slicker care guide. The Laekenois has a rough, tousled coat rather than long smooth hair and a plume. Shared FCI body measurements do not turn those coats into one maintenance routine.
