Laekenois: a rough Belgian coat with its own routine

The Laekenois has a dry, rough, tousled coat and a square body. Its facial furnishings should leave the head shape visible. Regular grooming and shared daily activity both need time in the week.

Rough hair, not a long plume

The Laekenois part of FCI standard 15 describes body hair about 6 cm long, shorter on the muzzle top, forehead and legs. Furnishings are required on the muzzle, but should not disguise the head or obscure the eyes. The tail does not form the plume seen on the long-haired Belgian varieties.

The shared FCI ideal heights are 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females, with 2 cm below or 4 cm above allowed, and approximate weights of 25–30 kg and 20–25 kg. The earlier UK ideal height ranges are 61–66 cm and 56–61 cm, with proportional rather than numerical weight.

Keeping the rough coat tidy

The AKC Laekenois guide recommends weekly grooming and occasional bathing. The UK category is more than once weekly. Arrange a demonstration with a groomer familiar with this coat if you need help keeping it tidy while retaining the rough appearance.

The same AKC guide includes regular nail trimming, ear checks for wax or debris and tooth brushing. Include these smaller tasks in the coat session so they are not overlooked between baths.

Owner participation is part of the plan

The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily and describes a large house and garden in either setting. The AKC describes an active life with people and daily occupation, rather than living alone in the yard. Consider how outings and shared activities will fit into your week, including the time to learn together.

Compare three distinct Belgian coats

The Groenendael has long black hair and a plumed tail, with daily brushing during heavy shedding. The Malinois is short-haired and uses a bristle brush or grooming mitt between seasonal slicker sessions. Their shared square proportions leave very different coat-handling jobs.
