Tervueren: long outer hair and a seasonal rake routine
The Tervueren has a square frame under long hair, a substantial ruff and a plumed tail. Its ordinary brush sessions expand when the undercoat sheds. Shared daily activity also takes time, so the full ownership routine includes both outings and coat maintenance.
Body size and the long-haired outline
The shared FCI Belgian Shepherd ideal is 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females, allowing 2 cm below or 4 cm above. Approximate weights are 25–30 kg and 20–25 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives ideal height ranges of 61–66 cm and 56–61 cm, with weight proportional to size.
The Tervueren has long, smooth outer hair over woolly undercoat, shorter hair on the head and lower limbs, and longer ruff, breeches and tail plume. Its FCI color description allows fawn or grey with black overlay and mask; the Groenendael is the uniform-black long-haired variety.
Pin brush, slicker and seasonal rake
The AKC Tervuren guide recommends thorough pin-and-slicker brushing once or twice weekly for most of the year. During shedding, at least yearly in that guide, sessions become longer and may be more frequent, with a rake added for dead undercoat. The UK grooming category is more than once weekly.
The AKC also supports regular nail trimming, ear checks and tooth brushing. Work through the denser layer as well as the visible long hair, allowing more time when the coat is coming out instead of forcing every session into one fixed duration.
Active time needs a place in the week
The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, with a large house and garden in either setting. The AKC emphasises challenging play and work shared with the owner, listing herding, agility and obedience among options. Which activity suits the dog still needs to be discovered through appropriate training and participation.
Compare long and short Belgian coats
The Groenendael shares the long-haired outline but has a separate AKC care page and a weekly-to-daily shedding routine. The Malinois has much shorter outer hair and seasonal slicker brushing. Compare the tools and owner time alongside their common FCI body dimensions.
