Bergamasco: flocks and the changing young coat
The Bergamasco’s broad flocks are not simply long cords. Different hair textures combine as the young coat changes, and the first separation work can be substantial. An adult coat that is not routinely brushed still needs cleaning, observation and a plan for keeping the dog comfortable.
Outline and measurements
A square body sits beneath the abundant coat. FCI gives ideal heights of 60 cm for males and 56 cm for females, with a tolerance of 2 cm either way; weights are 32–38 kg and 26–32 kg respectively. The UK guide states the corresponding height ranges, 58–62 cm and 54–58 cm, with those weight ranges. Coat volume can obscure the actual outline.
Flocks develop over time
FCI describes harsher, goat-like hair toward the front and woollier hair forming broad strands farther back. It places the beginning of flock formation at 12–15 months. AKC describes goat and wool hair appearing around a year, when separating the developing coat can take hours across several evenings. These are descriptions of a transition, not a promise that every puppy changes on one birthday.
Adult care
AKC advises against brushing the established adult coat and suggests bathing two or three times yearly, alongside regular nail care. FCI specifically calls for a clean coat and avoiding matted flocks around the beard, muzzle and ear flaps; excessive length or thickness must not hamper movement. Ask an experienced Bergamasco breeder to demonstrate flock separation and upkeep rather than applying a generic cord-making method.
Daily activity and comparison
The UK category is up to an hour of daily exercise, with grooming more than weekly. AKC describes moderate activity shared with the owner, including walks and play, rather than leaving the dog alone in a garden. Komondor cords and Spanish Water Dog curls offer useful comparisons, but neither supplies a substitute Bergamasco grooming recipe. Choose by the handling involved, including the young-coat stage.
