Black and Tan Coonhound: a dense coat and secure daily activity

The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short, dense coat and a body equal to or slightly longer than its height. Its large size is one practical consideration; arrangements for walking, enclosed play and regular grooming are equally useful to compare.

Height and proportion

The FCI standard gives 63.5–68.5 cm for males and 58–63.5 cm for females. It says oversize should not be penalised when general soundness and proportion favour the dog, without defining an additional numeric tolerance. No numeric weight range is supplied.

The earlier UK ideal heights are rounded differently, at 64–69 cm for males and 58–64 cm for females. Its body description, like the FCI proportions, avoids both a leggy and a very low outline. The back is level and strong, with the chest reaching the elbows.

Weekly coat care

AKC care advice recommends weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming tool or hound glove, along with occasional bathing and regular nail care. It describes heavier shedding once or twice a year, so leave room in the routine for extra loose-hair removal.

The earlier UK grooming category is also weekly. Ask about suitable tools and handling before assuming that a dense, short coat requires no work beyond an occasional bath.

A leash and a suitable enclosure

The UK guide lists up to one hour of daily exercise, a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC describes moderate exercise every day, with a long walk or yard play as options. It calls for a tall, solid fence and leashed walks because the dog may follow an animal’s scent.

Check the actual walking routes and exercise area available to you. The UK category and those activity examples help with planning, while the individual dog’s age and condition should shape the final routine.

Related hounds to compare

Bloodhounds have a rectangular 10:9 body ratio, more conspicuous head and neck folds and different size guidance. English Foxhounds have an approximate, unsexed FCI height range of 58–64 cm. Comparing those outlines and care requirements is more informative than relying on the shared short coat or hunting background.

The standard does not penalize taller Black and Tan Coonhounds when general soundness and proportion are favourable. It gives no additional numeric ceiling for that condition.
