Border Collie: two coats on a balanced outline

The Border Collie’s FCI standard describes a well-proportioned outline, with a body slightly longer than its height. It includes moderately long and smooth coats. A Border Collie therefore does not have to carry the fuller mane and tail hair associated with the longer-coated variety.

What both coats have in common

Both varieties have a dense, medium-textured topcoat over a soft, dense undercoat. In the moderately long coat, the longer hair forms a mane, breeching and a brush-like tail. Shorter, smooth hair remains on the face and parts of the legs.

The German Shepherd Dog also has two coat varieties with undercoat, but its long double coat has its own texture and outline. A shared double coat does not make the breeds look or measure alike.

Allow space in your day

The earlier UK guide records more than two hours of daily exercise and grooming more than once a week. It lists a small house but a large garden, in town or country. Reading those entries together gives more information than the medium-size label alone.

The Beagle entry has a smaller garden category and up to one hour of exercise. Use the comparison to think through your available time and space; the older categories are not a guarantee about an individual dog’s needs.

An ideal height is only part of the outline

The FCI male height ideal is 53 cm. Females are described only as slightly smaller, without a separate numeric height, and no numeric weight is stated. The German Shepherd and Beagle profiles offer different proportions and coat descriptions to compare alongside those figures.
