Boxer: a square build under a close coat

The Boxer has a compact, square outline, strong bone and clearly defined muscles in its FCI description. Its short coat lies close to the body, leaving that outline easy to see. The standard asks for substance without a cumbersome or heavy appearance.

The visible shape beneath short hair

The coat is short, hard and glossy. Fawn and brindle are the colors described, with a black mask. The French Bulldog also has a short, smooth coat, but its smaller, stockier proportions make a different silhouette.

The Rottweiler provides another useful contrast. Its standard describes a coarse topcoat and undercoat, rather than the Boxer’s short, close-fitting hair. Looking at texture as well as length helps distinguish their coats.

Think beyond the coat category

The earlier UK guide lists weekly grooming, more than two hours of daily exercise, a large house and large garden, in town or country. The Rottweiler has the same broad entries. Those similarities help frame a comparison, but do not mean identical bodies or individual care needs.

The French Bulldog’s exercise category is up to one hour and its home entry is a flat or apartment. Compare these earlier guide entries with the space and time you can offer, rather than choosing on coat length alone.

Weight is linked to reference height

The FCI standard describes males over 30 kg when height is about 60 cm, and females about 25 kg when height is about 56 cm. These linked figures are not a general weight range for every Boxer. The complete height ranges remain available in the facts below.
