Bullmastiff: short hair with regular skin and coat checks

The Bullmastiff combines a broad, compact body with short, hard hair. Its coat still sheds and needs regular attention. Daily walks, practical handling and checking the condition of skin and coat all belong in the ownership routine.

A compact, powerful build

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give males 64–69 cm and 50–59 kg, and females 61–66 cm and 41–50 kg. A short, straight back supports a compact outline, with a wide, deep chest and muscular loin.

The outer hair is short, hard and flat. Long, silky or woolly hair is outside that description. The UK weekly grooming category concerns a short coat, rather than a promise that little hair will be shed indoors.

Check the skin while grooming

The AKC guide describes seasonal shedding, frequent grooming and bathing as needed. It also calls for monitoring the skin and coat for unusual hair loss, dryness or oiliness. Changes deserve attention rather than simply increasing the amount of brushing.

A regular session gives you a chance to see the skin beneath the close hair and notice a change in condition. Bathing is tied to need in this guidance, without a fixed weekly or monthly interval.

Walking and growth need separate consideration

The UK guide places exercise above two hours daily, with a large house and garden in either setting. The AKC instead emphasises moderate daily activity, brisk walks and outdoor play, noting variation between individuals. It cautions against overexercising growing puppies and does not recommend the breed as a running partner. Discuss an appropriate routine for the dog’s age and condition.

Compare more than short hair

The Mastiff has a longer body and a different brush-and-comb routine, including regular facial wrinkle checks. The Dogue de Bordeaux has softer short hair and more detailed face-drying and bathing advice. Compare those hands-on jobs alongside the distinct size descriptions.
