Chesapeake Bay Retriever: more than a short coat

A Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a muscular, substantial outline and a short coat with a distinctive feel. The FCI standard describes a harsh outer layer with natural oil over a fine, woolly undercoat. Its coat is short, but it is quite different from the Labrador’s smooth-looking coat or the Curly Coated Retriever’s close curls.

Look at texture as well as length

The outer hair can wave over the shoulders, neck, back and loins, while the face and legs have short, straight hair. Moderate feathering is allowed behind the hindquarters and on the tail. Feathering means the longer hair that gives these areas a fringed outline.

The woolly undercoat sits beneath the outer hair. Together, these layers are described in the standard in relation to retrieving in cold water. The Labrador also has an undercoat, while the Curly has none.

Time and space to consider

The earlier UK guide lists weekly grooming and more than two hours of daily exercise, alongside a large house, large garden and country setting. The Labrador shares the grooming and exercise categories, but its location entry covers town or country. These are broad planning prompts from an earlier guide, rather than a care schedule for an individual dog.

Put the build beside another retriever

Chesapeake height ranges overlap several other retrievers. Its FCI figures are 58–66 cm for males and 53–61 cm for females, so height alone tells only part of the story.

Compare with the Labrador for two short-coated outlines, or the Curly for a sharper contrast between an oily double coat and close curls. Look at the coat, chest and overall proportions together.
