Cirneco dell’Etna: a square outline in a smaller hound

The Cirneco dell’Etna has a square body, upright ears and a short, sleek coat. It shares the UK Hound category with much taller dogs, but its dimensions and the practical choices around exercise deserve a separate look.

A distinct shape and classification

FCI places the Cirneco in Group 5, whereas the earlier UK guide uses Hound. The FCI description gives equal body length and height, with a straight, sloping topline. Group membership and body proportions are separate pieces of information.

FCI height is 46–50 cm for males and 44–48 cm for females, with a separate 2 cm allowance above or below. Weight is 10–13 kg for males and 8–11 kg for females. The coat is sleek and dense, approximately 2.5 cm over the body and tail, with smooth hair on the head, ears and legs.

Weekly care

The UK grooming category is weekly. AKC care advice describes a gentle weekly brush with a soft brush or hound glove, plus occasional bathing. Nail care and checking the ears also belong in the routine. There is no long feathering to maintain, but short hair does not remove those basic jobs.

Shared walks and play give the short-coat routine its wider context. Decide who will provide that activity through the week and where it will take place; grooming time is only one part of the daily commitment.

Space and daily activity

The earlier UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise daily, a small house, a small or medium garden, and either town or country. AKC describes long walks and shared activity, keeping the dog on a leash unless in a securely enclosed area.

Those home-size categories do not assess your particular property. Look at the available walking routes, fence condition and practical opportunities for shared play. A modest home and a suitable exercise plan are separate decisions.

Compare the other Group 5 hounds

Pharaoh Hounds are taller in the FCI standard and slightly longer than high. Ibizan Hounds are taller again in their male height range and have several coat descriptions across registries. All three sit in FCI Group 5; a similar short-coated appearance should not conceal the differences in size, proportions or coat variety.
