Clumber Spaniel: a long body under a straight coat

The Clumber Spaniel’s FCI description emphasises strong bone, a long, muscular body and short, straight forelegs. Its abundant coat lies close and straight, with feathering on the chest and legs. A predominantly white body, sometimes with lemon or orange markings, makes a clear contrast with the Sussex Spaniel’s golden liver coat.

Look at the frame as well as the hair

The coat has a silky texture, but the substantial frame remains an important part of the outline. The Sussex also has a strong build and short legs; its flat coat includes ample undercoat and softer, wavy hair on the ears.

The English Springer provides a different comparison, with the more leggy outline described in its own standard and a close, straight coat with moderate feathering.

A different set of time and space entries

The earlier UK guide pairs the Clumber’s large size category with a large house, a small or medium garden and a country setting. It lists grooming more than once a week and up to one hour of daily exercise.

The English Springer’s entry is more than two hours with a large garden, despite its smaller home category. Reading these older entries together is more useful than treating the size label as a complete care plan.

Combing, sniffing walks and retrieving

AKC’s Clumber care guide recommends a brush and medium comb once or twice a week, with little trimming. It also calls for attention to the ears and facial folds, including keeping the folds dry. These are more concrete tasks to plan for than treating a silky coat as effortless.

The same guide suggests long walks with pauses for sniffing and retrieving games in the garden. Plan for those activities alongside the available space. The earlier UK country category is a comparison entry, rather than a rule that excludes every urban home.

Weight guidance without a height figure

FCI ideal weights are 29.5–34 kg for males and 25–29.5 kg for females. No numeric height is supplied. Keep those weight ideals separate from any description of the dog’s height, and use the related profiles to compare the actual proportions.
