English Cocker Spaniel: a compact outline with flat, silky hair
This Cocker Spaniel profile refers to the English Cocker, with its own FCI standard and UK guide entry. The standard describes a sturdy, compact dog whose height is roughly the same as the distance from the withers to the tail root. The flat, silky coat has feathering on the body and legs.
Keep the two Cockers distinct
The English Cocker’s coat should not be wiry, wavy or curly, or so profuse that it overwhelms the outline. The American Cocker’s separate standard allows slightly wavy hair and describes medium-length body hair with undercoat. A shared Cocker name does not erase those differences.
The Field Spaniel also has flat, silky hair, with a longer coat description and abundant feathering beneath the body and behind the legs.
Daily grooming, with a different exercise entry
The earlier UK guide lists daily grooming, up to one hour of daily exercise, a small house and a small or medium garden, in town or country. The American Cocker’s guide entry also has daily grooming, but more than two hours of exercise and a large garden.
The Field Spaniel likewise has the higher exercise category, with grooming more than once a week. These earlier guide comparisons help put time and space alongside appearance; they are not individual care prescriptions.
Turn the grooming label into a routine
AKC’s separate English Cocker care guide recommends thorough brushing and combing at least weekly, with trimming around areas such as the feet, face, ears and tail roughly monthly. It also advises weekly ear checks for debris and excess wax. Those details add to the older UK daily-grooming entry; the two sources do not give an identical schedule.
For daily activity, AKC suggests walks, hikes and ball games. Its advice includes a leash on walks and a fenced garden. Think about where you can provide those activities as well as the time available for them and for coat care.
Approximate measurements, not American ideals
The English Cocker’s FCI heights are approximately 39–41 cm for males and 38–39 cm for females, with an approximate weight of 13–14.5 kg. These are its own figures, rather than the American Cocker’s adult height ideals and half-inch allowance.
