Coton de Tulear: cotton-like hair on a longer body

The Coton de Tulear’s FCI coat description is soft, supple, dense and cotton-like, with a very slight wave allowed. Its body is distinctly longer than its height: the standard gives a height-to-body-length ratio of 2:3. That differs from the square Bolognese, even when both are seen beneath a full white coat.

Get beneath the surface of the long coat

AKC’s Coton care guide recommends gentle daily brushing through to the skin for a full coat, rather than only smoothing the surface. It suggests spray conditioner while brushing and getting a puppy accustomed to grooming. The guide also recognises a short puppy clip as an alternative to keeping the full coat.

The earlier UK description leaves the coat untrimmed except for tidying the feet. With these options in view, ask a groomer how coat length will affect daily brushing and the appointments you need.

Compare the texture and the daily routine

The Havanese has soft, flat or wavy outer hair, while the Bolognese’s flocks stand away from its square body. The Coton’s cotton-like texture is its own feature, not another name for either coat.

The earlier UK guide lists daily grooming, up to 30 minutes of exercise, a flat or apartment and a small or medium garden, in town or country. Havanese and Bolognese share those categories. AKC’s Coton examples include daily walks and ball games; use those to think about activities as well as available space.

Keep the height allowances separate

FCI heights are 26–28 cm for males and 23–25 cm for females. Either sex has a separate allowance of 2 cm above or 1 cm below. Weights are 4–6 kg for males and 3.5–5 kg for females. Compared with the square Bolognese, the Coton combines those measurements with a longer body.
