English Springer Spaniel: a close coat on a taller-legged frame
The English Springer Spaniel has a compact, strong outline, with more leg beneath it than the lower-built spaniels used for comparison here. Its FCI standard describes close, straight, weather-resistant hair, with moderate feathering on the ears, legs, body and hindquarters. The coat should not feel coarse.
Compare the two Springers by detail
The English Springer’s colors include liver and white or black and white, either also with tan markings. The Welsh Springer’s separate standard instead specifies red and white, with silky, straight or flat hair and lighter feathering on the ears and tail.
The Clumber comparison draws attention to body shape: a long, strong body on shorter forelegs, rather than the English Springer’s taller-legged silhouette.
The home label is only one part of the picture
The earlier UK guide lists a small house for the English Springer, alongside a large garden and more than two hours of daily exercise. Grooming is more than once a week, and the location category covers town or country.
The Welsh Springer has the same entries. The Clumber differs with up to one hour of exercise, a large house and a smaller garden category. These older categories are useful planning comparisons, not guarantees of household suitability.
Tools for the feathering and activities to share
AKC’s English Springer care guide recommends weekly brushing to remove dirt and loose hair, with a slicker brush or metal comb for tangles. Tidying the feet, head, neck and underside of the tail can be done by an owner or a professional groomer. The older UK frequency category does not explain those tasks on its own.
Long walks and play are among AKC’s exercise suggestions, along with activities such as tracking, obedience and agility. These offer different ways to spend active time together; taking up competitive sport is an option rather than an obligation.
One approximate height in this standard
The FCI height is approximately 51 cm, without separate male and female figures. No numeric weight is given. The Welsh Springer’s separate approximate male and female heights should not be substituted here simply because both breeds are called Springer Spaniels.
