Entlebucher Mountain Dog: a close coat and an active daily plan

The Entlebucher is the smaller dog in this Swiss comparison, with a strong, elongated body and a close double coat. Loose hair still needs removing. Its care guide places a substantial emphasis on active time with the owner.

Compact does not mean square

The FCI height ranges are 44–50 cm for males, with tolerance up to 52 cm, and 42–48 cm for females, up to 50 cm. The earlier UK guide calls the main ranges ideal and allows the same extra 2 cm above. Neither size section supplies a numerical weight here.

Height to body length is 8:10. The back is straight, firm and broad, over a chest reaching the elbows. Short, harsh, shiny outer hair covers dense undercoat; a slight wave on the withers or back is tolerated by the standard.

Short hair still sheds

The AKC suggests a damp-towel wipe between baths and a stripping comb or thick-bristle brush for loose hair. The UK category is weekly grooming.

The AKC also includes monthly nail trimming, weekly ear checks and dental care maintained throughout life. These smaller tasks deserve a place in the routine even when the short outer coat looks tidy after a quick wipe.

Make room for active outings

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a small house and large garden in either setting. The AKC describes at least an hour of daily activity and shared outings with an active owner. Read these as separate planning descriptions, rather than converting the UK category into a minimum or assuming garden access replaces participation.

Compare the Swiss daily workload

The Great Swiss Mountain Dog is taller in its own standard and has a moderate walking-oriented activity description. The Bernese carries long outer hair and needs daily brush-outs during shedding. Choose between the whole routines, including handling size, loose hair and time outdoors.
