Estrela Mountain Dog: two coat lengths, one substantial care commitment

The Estrela comes in long-haired and short-haired varieties. Both have abundant hair with a slightly coarse, goat-hair-like texture. Regular coat care and daily shared activity need planning alongside the practical space occupied by a large dog.

Keep the two size descriptions separate

The FCI gives males 65–73 cm and 45–60 kg, females 62–69 cm and 35–45 kg, with a height tolerance of 2 cm above. The earlier UK guide instead lists 65–72 cm and 62–68 cm, allowing 4 cm above, without a numerical weight.

The body is moderately long with an almost level topline. The long-haired coat has fuller neck, tail and leg furnishings; the short-haired variety has short outer hair and shorter undercoat. Both share the characteristic slightly coarse texture.

Care for the coat actually present

The AKC care guide explicitly covers both coat lengths and recommends weekly grooming and occasional baths. The UK category is more than once weekly. Allow time to check the fuller furnishings of a long-coated dog rather than judging the job from the head’s shorter hair.

Regular nail trimming, ear checks for wax or debris and tooth brushing are included in the same guide. A clipper or grinder is suggested for nails; ask for help learning the technique before tackling unfamiliar nails yourself.

Daily activity with variety

The UK category is up to one hour of exercise, with a large country house and garden. The AKC suggests daily walks, fenced play and indoor games or learning when weather limits outings. Plan those activities with the dog, rather than assuming open space alone supplies a complete daily routine.

Compare distinct mountain coats

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog has its own long outer coat and pin-or-slicker brushing advice. The Maremma has long, rather harsh hair with fuller winter undercoat and a brush-and-comb routine. Neither supplies a substitute maintenance method for the Estrela’s short-haired variety.
