Finnish Lapphund: weekly grooming becomes daily at shedding time

The Finnish Lapphund is strong for its size, slightly longer than tall and covered in a long double coat. The practical distinction is between ordinary weekly maintenance and the daily brushing needed during shedding. A garden alone does not supply its shared daily activity.

A long outer coat and a smaller frame

The FCI gives ideal shoulder heights of 49 cm for males and 44 cm for females, with a tolerance of 3 cm either way; type matters more than exact size. The earlier UK guide uses the same ideals and tolerance. Neither of these descriptions supplies a numerical weight range.

Long, harsh outer hair covers soft, dense undercoat, with an especially abundant mane in males. The body is slightly longer than the height, with a strong, straight back and a rather long chest. This outline differs from the finely frizzy undercoat described for the Swedish Lapphund.

Brushing between baths

The AKC care guide recommends weekly brushing, increasing to daily during shedding, and occasional baths. Work through the loose undercoat rather than waiting for it to collect into tangles. Its guidance keeps the coat at its natural length and advises against shaving this breed.

Regular nail trimming is part of the same grooming advice. Regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing are also recommended in the guide. Combine these smaller jobs with the coat session so that maintenance remains manageable when shedding adds more work.

Walks, play and something to do

The earlier UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a small house and small or medium garden in either town or country. The AKC describes a brisk daily walk and shared ball play, and lists herding, agility, rally and tracking as activities owners may explore. Allow time to participate: it notes that Lapphunds do not necessarily exercise themselves.

Compare the two Lapphunds carefully

The Swedish Lapphund also needs weekly brushing and extra help with a heavy seasonal shed, but has its own rectangular outline and coat texture. The Eurasier offers another medium-sized comparison, with loosely lying guard hair and different height and weight figures. Similar size categories do not make their coats interchangeable.
